Access is possible via John McDonald Road, not via Pukehinau Road (private). About 20 min drive time, vehicle with 4WD is advantageous. The place is surrounded by forest and clean. A toilet is available, but no running water. There is hardly reception.
Top-notch, 5 stars. A free campsite like they don't make anymore. A relaxing space surrounded by nature with a breathtaking view of the stars. Toilets in perfect condition and plenty of parking. Don't turn where your GPS tells you to, but take the John McDonald road; it's a great gravel road, accessible even without a 4x4 when the weather is good.
Road is fine for 2 wd it's a gravel road with some pot holes. It's a 15 min drive from the main road to camp site. When you arrive there it will be extremely quiet with one toilet. No phone signal. Stars are beautiful from here.
Road has recently been fixed up. OK for 2 wheel drive vehicles at present but recommended that you have 4 wheel drive. Not suitable for large vehicles. Follow signs until you get to Okupata caves then another 1.5km up to end of road. Campsite and Toilet on right.
Gave up on trying to find it. Camped illegally on the road.
4 by 4, at night, there were rabbits on the 'street' at all times, almost one hour in first gear, guessing at every other junction due to lacking signs, poor toilet. No, thanks! Going back and forth for nothing, it's better to pay for a reasonable campsite, to not waste your nerves, time and car!
Very off campsite but free and if you want to be alone it's perfect! It took us 35 min with our 2wd car from the main road. The oad is really bad with big rocks, cracks and pot holes. Follow the DOC signs towards Okupata caves and then 200 m more. No water but a long drop toilet is provided and we could make a fire in the evening :)
Widely available in classic car although the track is bad. 12km takes half an hour. Follow okupata cellars pukehinau especially not okupata rd! the ground is huge and the surroundings are nice and cool.
