Such a rewarding hike! It’s a very heavy one and you need to be really fit, most of the time it’s just climbing up pulling yourself up on the tree roots but it’s adventurous at the same time. Took us 4/5 hours to reach the hut. Make sure that you stay the night because it’s so beautiful out there! Just book the hut upfront. If you’re up for a challenge I would definitely recommend doing this hike!
February 12 friday we went and had hut for ourselvs nobody else came. Could fit 4 couples and extra 2-4 people kn ground maximum capacity. Amazing stars at night one of best huts we ever saw to stay in.
Amazing ! View is spectacular once on top. Steep but in a funny way, like almost climbing thru roots so it does not feel that difficult. Took us about 3.5h to get on top (but we lost the track for maybe 45’ after crossing the creek - pay extra attention in that part, it’s quite dark with the trees and the track is sometimes confusing - make sure you follow carefully the signs). Once on top there is a toilet and water as well as the cutest hut (even has a heater w charcoal bag next to it . The sunset must be stunning). About 2.5 hours to get back down- overall we took our time, had a nice beak on top, we left by 9am and came back down around 5pm. We totally recommend it, mainly if it’s a clear and sunny day. It’s challenging but not that difficult, we had a great time. Have fun!
The track is muddy and really steep but your efforts paid off with a great view over the lake and surrounding mountains (as long as there are no clouds). You need 2 1/2 hours to the hut. There is another track to the top of the mountain starting behind the hut, but it's no official DOC walk.
Nice place :)
It's a challenging track, which was muddy and slippery after the rain. Took us 3,5hrs to climb up, it's hard with a backpack on your shoulder but the view from the top is stunning and feels so rewarding in the end! Stay up there for a night in the hut (4 bunks) and you'll experience an amazing sunset over the ocean. Otherwise leave your backpacks behind and go for a daily hike. Just be careful when descending. It can be quite dangerous!
Amazing trail! It’s very steep, so be prepared to get your hands dirty. It can get a bit muddy in some parts, so be sure to wear good shoes. There’s a small creek crossing. Only do this when the weather is good. If so, you’ll be rewarded with the most stunning view when your at the hut. I just came back from an overnight trip there and had the hut all to myself. It took me 3 hours up, with lots of looking where to put my feet, and 2 hours down, I’d say I’m an average hiker. It was all I dreamt of and more!
Not suitable for walking
We were almost up the hill, but needed to return as the way was very swampy and also with good boots not suitable. We can't recommend to go up at the moment as the whole way is muddy really exhausting due to climbing parts as well. Due to cloudy weather, we also had no view.
Great little hut! Had it all to myself for the night. The hike up is a challenging steep uphill climb- but can be done in 2 hours and is very rewarding! Beautiful views and sunset too.
