Quaint little place where they’re doing a great job bringing back an endangered species being the Takahē mainly & others. This chicken sized flightless bird has quite vibrant plumage. The aviaries are all large & well setup with plenty of natural foliage where shy birds can retreat. They had some other birds like parakeets & ducks. We got up early to leave our camp site to make their 10.30am presentation by the ranger but unfortunately it was cancelled due to staff shortage. Still worth a look.
Encantador lugar de conservación todos los pájaros son muy bien cuidados y todos solo se mantienen aquí si no pueden ser liberados en el campo o están a punto de ser realizados en el campo salvaje! Definitivamente recomendaría ir a las 10:30 si puede ya que hay un tour por un ranger que es solo $ 10 cada uno y se consigue para alimentar paraguas y ir al recinto de Takahe! Además los ranger son excelentes y le dan mucha información! Los $ 10 también va hacia la conservación! Definitivamente recomiendo una parada en el camino a Milford Sound o si usted está en la zona de Te Anau!
Currently 6 bird species, all in outdoor enclosures in a park-like setting. There's info signs that explain their natural history. Great relaxing place if you are into nature. Please make a donation if you can afford to. Public toilet available.
There is no pain for these birds living in cages- read the information given! They are rare species, some of them were harmed and would‘nt survive in the wilderness anymore. Others are raised and when they are old enough they get realised into the wild! This center is just awesome and the birds are lovely. I am very thankful to the people fighting to protect these precious native birds ??

Interesting visit that works on donations. There is no time to feed the birds.
Great sanctuary, lot of birds to see (Kakas, Big dukes, takahes..)
At feeding time, the ranger is great, gives a lot of explanations and let you feed some birds. Kids loved it !
We were disappointed with this place because the animals do not look in shape and the aviaries are very small, they have no place to steal, very bad
