We decided to detour despite the comments. The gravel road is probably about 6km or so from when you leave the bitumen to when you return. There is no access but yes, you can get a sense of things and about a km north further up the road the river curves around and comes near the road. It’s actually quite a good photo op and even if it isn’t the river where Arwen sent the water horses after the wraiths, it feels like it is. So do with this information what you will. ☺️

The gravel road isn't as bad as described before, but you can't get to the location.

Private property, pebble path, almost no visibility ...

Definitely not worth the detour. Didn't see anything, the property is private property and the road was a horrible gravel road.

Totally got the vibe of Arwen racing along with Frodo to save his butt! You can't get into the woods themselves because it's private but you can see in from the road!

There is absolutely nothing here. Scene 17 is written there is surely a report but forbidden access.

It’s not the most scenic place in New Zealand but it is cool to see where they filmed the scene with Arwen. It looks just like in the film and you can easily recognize it. You can’t walk amongst the trees because it’s private property but it’s not too far of a detour so I thought it was worth it.
