Until early evening there is a moderate risk that thunderstorms may become severe from Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula southwards to Bay of Plenty and across the central high country to Taranaki, as depicted on the chart. Severe thunderstorms will produce localised downpours with rainfall rates of 25 to 40 mm per hour.
Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.
Note: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and monitor for possible Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.
For information on preparing for and keeping safe during a storm, see the Civil Defence Get Ready website

Great view and experience. But: The way back in particular is almost criminal, extremely slippery, uncomfortable and dangerous. Definitely take at least good hiking shoes and ideally also poles and gloves.
The way up is exhausting but definitely worth it! Would hardly recommend going early in the morning on a sunny day. You have to enjoy the sunset?
Super hard track with perfect sun weather. The view is awesome! Absolutely do it!
Tough trek to the summit but totally worth it for the views and sense of accomplishment. Getting down the mountain is a lots harder than going up :)
Awesome
We did the summit track with really sunny prevision. We started at 4:15h and the sunrise was awesome in the way up! We would hardly recomend to go early. Its better to wear hike shoes and poles because the last part is quite slippery
The walk took me 8 hours. I had a lot of breaks on the way up to enjoy the view. Didn't had any hiking shoes or poles, totaly fine in good weather conditions :)
Must do in New Zealand!
We left around half past midnight to arrive at the summit for the sunrise. We took our time because there is really a way to do it in less time! Plan warm clothes because it is really cold at the top! Gloves are particularly indispensable. Have a good headlamp to see the stakes. Sure, it was worth it! Do not forget to look behind the mountain when the sun rises to see its shadow ..!
Climbing Mount Taranaki Summit is one of the things you need to do on the North Island !!! The view is indescribably beautiful!
