While it's close you can go through the road but should not leave your car

Still closed. Road has great views of the coast, but it does take 40min-1hr round trip from Te Araroa to get to the lighthouse and back, so unless you have time to spare, best bet would be to drive ~10-15min in to see the coast then turn around.
