The road is very rough and inaccessible for vans.
The road is relatively passable when it hasn't rained for several minutes, but very uncomfortable. We drove at about 20 km/h for 12 km. We didn't go as far as the nearby campsite, feeling completely isolated. We didn't dare go into the toilets.
Terrible road, muddy, narrow bushes scratch car paint.
Directions aren't correct, you need to take John McDonald road which is rd before heading north. It's about 11km up a forest track, was bit rough in places but slowly you will get there if not in a 4wd. You can walk about 200m down a track to see caves but there isn't camping here, another couple kms up there is pokaka mill campsite which is a big basic flat area to camp. Toilet between caves & campsite. Probably not ideal in 2wd if just for one nite
The path is not indicated. We must make a passage in the water (depending on the level the barrier is closed). It takes at least 7-8km, because Google maps does not locate the cellars. We finally gave up and landed a little after the education center. No passage except for a few hunters early in the morning.
No recent comments but the sign at the entrance indicates no camping on the entire reserve then after it is 4-8km of gravel road. We turned around after 1km the road was getting worse and worse.
The road seemed pretty rough after the half so we stayed before the place. Plenty of area across the forestry without blocking ways. You have to be fully self-contained as there are no water nor toilets around.
Stay away from this spot. Exhausting 30min drive on bad gravel road.
