Quaint little place where they’re doing a great job bringing back an endangered species being the Takahē mainly & others. This chicken sized flightless bird has quite vibrant plumage. The aviaries are all large & well setup with plenty of natural foliage where shy birds can retreat. They had some other birds like parakeets & ducks. We got up early to leave our camp site to make their 10.30am presentation by the ranger but unfortunately it was cancelled due to staff shortage. Still worth a look.
Currently 6 bird species, all in outdoor enclosures in a park-like setting. There's info signs that explain their natural history. Great relaxing place if you are into nature. Please make a donation if you can afford to. Public toilet available.
There is no pain for these birds living in cages- read the information given! They are rare species, some of them were harmed and would‘nt survive in the wilderness anymore. Others are raised and when they are old enough they get realised into the wild! This center is just awesome and the birds are lovely. I am very thankful to the people fighting to protect these precious native birds ??
An assortment of chickens!!
Much pain for these birds in cages ...
Interesting visit that works on donations. There is no time to feed the birds.
Great sanctuary, lot of birds to see (Kakas, Big dukes, takahes..)
At feeding time, the ranger is great, gives a lot of explanations and let you feed some birds. Kids loved it !
We were disappointed with this place because the animals do not look in shape and the aviaries are very small, they have no place to steal, very bad
