On the fifth day of our outback adventure, we continue westward to Charleville, which we'll use as a base for the events to come. It's like finding an archaeological dig before it's uncovered. Charleville Airport became part of the United States of America in 1940 when the site was handed over to the United States Military as a top secret site during World War II.

Charleville Cosmos Centre

The Cunnamulla Fella is a song written by Stan Coster and sung by Slim Dusty. 

He is an iconic Australian Bush character. The town of Cunnamulla has erected a statue of the Cunnamulla Fella as a tribute to Stan and Slim and to the "ringers" of the bush. 

The statue is double life size bronze.

„The Cunnamulla Fella“ ist ein Lied, das von Stan Coster geschrieben und von Slim Dusty gesungen wurde. Er ist eine ikonische Persönlichkeit des australischen Bush. Out the Back Australia Tours

Bowra Wildlife Sanctuary has a long reputation as a reliable birding site with a bird list of more than 200 species, including nine threatened species. 

Three species of Australian Babblers are present and the rare Grey Falcon has been known to breed on the sanctuary. 

All proceeds from Bowra campground and visitor program will go back into the running of the campground and conservation of wildlife. 

Camping is in open areas adjacent to the amenities. There are facilities for‚ÄØa few caravans or camper trailers to access 240 volt power. This power is quite limited and not suitable for air conditioning, heating, cooking or other power-hungry uses. 

The water supply is bore water from the Great Artesian Basin. There are a couple of marked walks nearby including the nearby lagoon.

Our camp sites can accommodate just one vehicle with room for a van or tent.

Open fires of any type are not permitted. 

Das Bowra Wildlife Sanctuary genießt seit langem den Ruf eines zuverlässigen Vogelbeobachtungsgebiets mit einer Vogelliste von mehr als 200 Arten, darunter neun bedrohte Arten. The Charleville Bilby Experience offers a must-see show! Join a tour of our nocturnal house (where we alter the timing so that the bilby’s night is during our day) and see some super cute bilbies during their night-time activities. After an engaging talk by one of our keepers you will understand more about the plight of this delightful eco-engineer and exactly why they are worth saving from extinction.

The Save the Bilby Fund has been working hard on the breeding facility here in Charleville and we have produced over 50 babies in the last couple of years. Our management of the pairings (ensuring genetic diversity) means that we are helping build up the bilby populations across Australia with the intent of insuring them against extinction. 

Protecting bilbies and their environments mean that many many other native Australian species (some not as cute as our bilbies!) will also be saved.
