    About

The Lake Waikaremoana track boasts the North Island's largest expanse of native forest and traverses the ancestral lands of Ng_i T_hoe, known as the 'Children of the Mist.'

This Great Walk, which encircles the magnificent lake within Te Urewera's boundaries, unfolds over three to four days. Along the journey, you'll explore pristine rainforests, regenerating wetlands, native bush, and enchanting 'goblin forests.' The route unveils spectacular rivers, waterfalls, and mist-filled valleys.

For centuries, the T_hoe people have inhabited the Te Urewera region, forging deep spiritual connections with the land. Their isolation and profound respect for the forests, mountains, rivers, and lakes have safeguarded this area from foresters and farmers.

Teeming with almost every North Island native forest bird species, the region offers a glimpse into New Zealand's avian heritage. The melodious calls of the t__ and the presence of kerer_ (wood pigeons) are sure to accompany your journey. Keep an ear out for the kiwi's calls at dusk, as they roam these lands.
