Tongariro Alpine Crossing
About
The Crossing is one of the most sought-after day walks in the world, but although beautiful, it can be dangerous if you're not fully prepared to enter an alpine environment. Extreme weather, terrain and distance have resulted in this track having the highest number of search and rescues in New Zealand.
- Duration: allow 7-8 hours.
- Distance: 19.4km one way.
- Best time to go: from October through to April.
From May to October, snow and ice means alpine skills and experience are essential - it's best to go with guide or choose another track. You should expect freezing temperatures, icy-cold winds and short daylight hours.
Safety Information
It's a long and challenging hike. You must be fit and experienced. Make sure you're prepared. If you find it too challenging, or it is taking longer than expected, your shuttle driver can pick you up back at the start. Just give them a call.
You'll need warm and wet weather gear, as well as a strong pair of hiking boots and enough water for the whole trip. Start your walk nice and early to leave yourself enough daylight hours but make sure you pack a head torch just in case.
High winds, snow and freezing temperatures can occur any time of the year. Be prepared to turn back if you're not equipped for it.
Check the official Tongariro National Park weather forecast before you go.
Stay on the track by following the orange poles and triangles. Walking off the track is disrespectful and damages the environment.
