About
Orokonui Ecosanctuary, called Te Korowai o Mihiwaka in Maori, is a 307-hectare biodiversity sanctuary near Dunedin, New Zealand. It is home to many threatened species and habitats and has a long-term goal to ensure its species thrive.
The ecosanctuary is surrounded by a 9-kilometre predator fence, which keeps introduced mammalian predators such as rats, stoats, and possums out. This allows native wildlife to thrive in a safe environment.
Orokonui is home to a variety of native New Zealand species, including:
Birds: kaka, kakariki, kereru, kiwi, saddleback, and more. Reptiles: tuatara, skinks, geckos, and more. Insects: weta, cicadas, butterflies, and more. Plants: manuka, kanuka, rimu, totara, and more.
