About

These large lakes and their tributaries provide good quality high country fishing for brown trout, rainbow trout and landlocked Quinnat (Chinook) salmon. Scenically the area is most attractive, the focal point being lakes bordered by high mountains, and fed by snow-fed rivers that flow out of the main ranges down appealing valleys. Water runs rapidly through beech forest and across grassy flats, and snow-capped peaks are often close at hand. TROLLING is popular on both Wanaka and Hawea, especially at the heads of both lakes at the deltas of the Makarora and Hunter rivers. On Lake Hawea the best sites t0o launch a boat are in the camping ground, a few hundred metres past the dam on the Haast Highway, and at The Neck. Fishing from the shores of Lake Hawea is very popular, especially with spin anglers. Spots close to where streams run in are always worth trying, especially morning and evening. When spin fishing, during the day fish are usually more difficult to catch if conditions are bright, and even more especially if they are calm.
