About
This large, temperamental river flows down a wide glacial valley and enters Lake Wanaka from the north-west. The Matukituki has two main branches, the west and east, which have their source on the Main Divide within sight of the magnificent snow and ice spire Mt Aspiring. The Matukituki Valley is the route used by most trampers and climbers en route to the peaks and passes of the Aspiring region. It is about 42km from Wanaka town to the confluence of the east and west branches.
