Upper Mataura - Garston

The upper Mataura River near Garston provides world class trout fishing. If you like to sight fish, this stretch of river is perfect. However, don't expect easy fishing. Fishing to brown trout (1-2kg) in this section of river can be challenging. Angling pressure throughout the season is high so the trout are wary of anglers. A careful approach with light gear is required. Spin anglers will find fishing challenging during bright conditions when the river is low. Spin anglers will do better during cloudy conditions when the river flow is higher. Fly anglers need to use small nymphs in the riffles. They should use small blow fly imitations during bright, warm conditions.
