    About

The Pupu Hydro Walkway retraces the historic path of an old gold-mining water race, ingeniously repurposed for hydroelectric power generation. While the initial ascent to reach the water race line may present a modest incline, the first segment leading across Te Waikoropup_ River to the power station offers a gentle grade suitable for individuals of all ages. Moving beyond the power station, the trail meanders over Campbell Creek and ascends in a zigzag pattern, culminating in an encounter with the water race approximately half an hour into the hike.

At this juncture, the terrain levels out, and the path continues along the water race in an 'upstream' direction for a brief distance, ultimately leading to a lookout point positioned above the power station.

A word of caution: Beyond this point, it is highly recommended to carry young children securely in a backpack and exercise vigilant supervision over other children, as the risk of a fall from the race, and the water itself, can be potentially hazardous.

The water race, an engineering marvel of its era, closely adheres to the steep contours of the hillside, assuming characteristics of both a canal and an aqueduct. Keen observers may even catch a glimpse of sizable koura (freshwater crayfish) if they scrutinize the water closely.

Continue to follow the water race for approximately 30 minutes or so, leading to the weir, which signifies the termination of the walkway and doubles as a picturesque spot for picnics. The weir serves as a conduit, channeling water from the creek into the race; here, a substantial shutter was manipulated to regulate the volume of water extracted from the stream.

For those who desire a circular route, the Hydro Society 4WD vehicle access track originating from the weir enables a return journey to the carpark, forming a loop walk that takes approximately 50 minutes to complete.
