Fishing Spot in Taranaki, Taranaki New Zealand
The lower reaches of New Plymouth’s closest river provide fishing for good-sized brown trout using nymph, dry fly and spin fishing techniques. The Waiwhakaiho River is subject to rapid rises in river level following heavy rainfall on the mountain — so please check rainfall and river flows before going fishing. In the lower river, generation from the Mangorei power station can result in a 20cm rise in water level and an increase in flow from around 2m3/s up to 10m3/s, so care should be taken when crossing as one could end up stranded on the wrong side of the river.
