Mine Bay Maori Carvings

The Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings are located on the sheer rock face of a cliff overlooking Lake Taupo and can only be reached by boat.

The main carving is a likeness of Ngatoroirangi, a visionary Maori navigator who guided the Tuwharetoa and Te Arawa tribes to the Taupo area over a thousand years ago. Ngatoroirangi is depicted standing tall and proud, with his arms outstretched and his gaze fixed on the horizon. He is surrounded by smaller carvings of other important Maori figures, including his wife, Hinetapu, and his son, Turongo.

The carvings were created by master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell and his team over a period of four years, from 1976 to 1980. They are a testament to the skill and artistry of Maori carvers, and they provide a unique glimpse into Maori culture and mythology.

Visitors can take a boat tour or kayak trip to see the carvings up close and learn about their significance from a knowledgeable guide.
