Don't bother with the 4 wheel drive tour. This 12 km walk gives you a fantastic wildlife and tranquil walk for free. For me, the best part was the return leg on the Tasman sea side. We saw hundreds of Bar-tailed Godwit - a truly awesome sight.
Super ballad, alone in the world in the middle of the dunes it's great!
Nice walk, but check the tides before you go, because the eastern side of the track isn't walkable during high tide.
A magical and surely unavoidable place of the golden bay. At the moment of crossing the dune, one has the impression of being in the middle of a dessert. It is necessary to envisage a blow wind, even in good weather. Bob
Another great spot, really impressive, quiet and peaceful. The kind of place that feels good in your mind. The sand is fine and soft as far as the eye can see, it's like being in a desert. I highly recommend, a must in the Golden Bay area!
We also did the hike, first across the beach to the beach and made a detour to the fossil beach, was really nice and we were all there by ourselves. The weather was cloudy and windy, but that did not bother the view.
At 2.8 km we realised we had certainly missed the first crossover (apparently it is quite at the beginning, not at all at the place of thumbs up on the map) so we decided to make a 90 degrees turn and cross the dunes were we had arrived. View on the top is magnificent, but it is a long crossover, especially if you go diagonal?. Walk in total was 8.2 km and took us about 2 hours. But we had fun! At the end you go through private land between the cows and sheeps.
Super beautiful path, one of the best half-day hikes in the South Island. Something very different with dunes and beach and nature. Definitely recommended. In any case, put on firmer shoes in hot weather, as otherwise your feet will burn easily on the hot sand. Do not forget sunscreen as there is no shade. Definitely recommended. Note the signs on the second half of the walk. Hard to find.
Beautiful place, 3h AR to the sand dunes! My favorite place in New Zealand. Go without wind preference
A magic place! It looks like on another planet :-) better take a jacket even if it’s warm and sunny, it gets super windy on the other side of the shore.
