The camps on the north side of the river are managed by Waimate district council https://www.waimatedc.govt.nz/community/camping/1waimate-lakes You can pay your camp fees with a Penny account. There are toilets only and non potable water. Dump station is for chemical toilet waste only. You can buy a seasons pass, season is mid September- May and I think this may have been the reason for previous comment re tents etc as many set up their sites for the season and come for weekends and holidays.
I’m going to be posting this same comment about all the sites in this location that we tried to stop at as there isn’t much up to date info. They are full of derelict old campers, camper trailers and even tents. Unsure why or what this is, but we were not willing to stay in a single one of these sites. Gives a very creepy abandoned town feeling. No thanks.
We have camped here quite a few times. $20 per night. We think this is very expensive for what you get. Grass is very long, only mowed once a year, sometimes sheep are put in to graze. All the locals bring their own lawn mowers to mow their own patches so the weekend is like you're living in suburbia. Water must be boiled at all times and taps are sparsely put around the camp grounds. You might get to see a wallaby jumping around at night! We do keep coming back because the fishing is pretty good. The other side of the lake is far better kept and the same price.
I loved this campsite. Great if you have a kayak or boat, beware of winds coming out of nowhere though! Lots of camper vans and such around but not busy. The site offers season passes so lots of people just leave there campers there all season. Still plenty of space and beautiful for a daytime swim and nighttime star gazing
Beautiful area with pristine settings. There are a number of campsites, mostly with caravans belonging to people who come for long weekend holidays. All these sites have toilets. All cleaned daily.
10$ pp and look around for a spot that pleased. Lots of seasonal campers. Can be dusty and windy.
