We weren’t meant to stay, was just planning on doing the Rob Roy’s walk and head back to Wanaka but the site was so beautiful we stayed for 2 nights. 6 toilets on site. Please note, the track is pretty rough, at least 45 mins down a bumpy dirt track and you have to cross multiple fords (we drove a hiace). We were lucky that the fords didn’t have too much water but take it steady. Beaut road to drive down though! Multiple Kea flying around but whilst beautiful they can damage cars!
Perfect campsite before doing a hike. 4 clean toilets and a sheltered area for picnic. Sinks available. The gravel track is tricky but doable in a small camper. Saw large campers at the site too so doable if driving carefully.
Amazing place with views on the mountains, perfect to go hiking from here !
We stayed here for two nights. The place is beautiful, and we managed to get mobile reception by parking at the top of the car park. We have a Toyota Hiace and scraped the underside when crossing the last ford on the way in, then got stuck in the same spot on the way back. The engine cover broke — just some plastic, nothing serious. During our stay, we saw a tow truck come to pick up another van that had probably broken down, and a car with a flat tire. I wouldn’t recommend crossing the last fo
Stayed here one night on the 1st of November, beautiful spot, especially with snow capped mountains. The fords were...interesting. The second to last one was by far the worst as it wasn't a flat bed but it was only 1 ft deep. Plenty of cars and vans drove through it easily, just don't stop!
More a 4WD stuff. I was there and in dry weather and turned before the second ford with a Mercedes 2 Berth 7m long mostly because of the ground clearance.
If you struggle to ford the first crossing then you’ll have a hard time with the last one, but it’s right before the campground so you can park up on the side of the road and camp there. Take care when visiting after rainfall and make sure you know if it’s raining while you’re away on your overnight walk. Made it across in my subaru legacy (factory clearance) and knocked my bumper on the final crossing. No need to go any faster than 60km on the road, enjoy the views and look out for potholes
