Amazing time spent out on the lagoon, saw kotuku in their natural environment. Lots of different areas to explore on the lagoon. Friendly and helpful owners/staff who are passionate about their slice of paradise. Reasonable rates. Definitely worth a detour off the main road to kayak, do walks and beachcomb at Okarito. We will be back.
Nice walk to appreciate the calm and the birds on the water. Super friendly and welcoming team. We spent 2 hours super with 2 children.
Totally amazing thing to do (probably a must-do for any nature lover)! Beatiful nature (unique birds) and top notch service from everyone envolved. At the end you get free coffee and postcards from this unique place! Thank you.
Couldn‘t agree more with the previous comment, one of the best experiences I‘ve made in nz! The lagoon is beautiful and it‘s easy to navigate after the briefing. The owners and the staff are very nice, they are taking their time to brief you carefully and giving useful advise in terms of the birdlife and the nature, you can see out there. Furthermore the coffee is good as too! Thank you guys for the amazing day! Cheers, Daniel
Great experience, one of the best in New Zealand. Highly recommended. They do what they love and you can see the quality of what they offer. We spent an amazing two-hour cruise. Unforgettable. Thank you.
We started at 08:00AM for a 4hours trip. The staff gave us a perfect briefing, a map for navigation and sea bag for our equipment. The place is very nice and calm enough to watch and listen to many different birds. After we came back we got a coffee from the staff. It‘s a small company but very professional. We can suggest. Thank‘s Claudia and Oliver from Austria
We went for a 2h trip on the lagoon. The map was clear and the scenery was so nice! we saw the kotuku fishing and flying, amazing! as the tide was lowering, the birds came gathering their food. The staff was friendly, we received a hot beverage afterwards. They are clearly passionate about their profession, very clean kayaks and we had no smelly jackets! we would definitely recommend this kayaktrip!
Beautiful experience, we enjoyed our halfday Trip a lot. It is exhausting, if you go fast, but there really isn’t any reason to rush - so if you take a couple of breaks, you will be fine! Thanks so much to the team of okarito kayaks - we had a wonderful time and will definitely recommend you guys to anybody we meet!
Horrible experience! I would definitely not recommend booking a tour with this company. They may be quiet cheap but the service is the worst. The staff was already annoyed and pretty rude when we arrived. They brief you for like 5 mins, give you a really confusing map and then you're on you're own. There isn't much to see on any of the routes (except for bush and water) so you get lost pretty easily. The owner blamed us on getting lost, got pretty loud and even wanted to make us pay for damage on the boat which had already been there when we first got it. So please do yourself a favour and do not go there..
“Okarito Kayaks note: The two girls on this kayak trip decided to force their kayak under a tree and go to areas they were clearly briefed to not go to. This created large marks and scratches from the tree across the kayak, and damage to the elastic cords on the top of the kayak. After the kayak was thoroughly cleaned, the damage could be seen to be minor, that we could repair, and no charge was made for the damage. The girls were asked to leave after paying after they agreed that they would not have treated their own equipment this way. We do ask and expect kayakers to treat our equipment with basic respect; that way we can always provide decent equipment for all our kayakers. It's very rare for us to get someone who behaves in this way, as you can see from other comments left on this app. The same would apply to renting a car, or using anything that doesn't belong to you. Pretty simple really, and just common decent behaviour. Some of the other comments about staff being rude or annoyed on arrival, a confusing map, easy to get lost and too short a briefing just don't seem to make sense to us, and and very different to what we hear from our kayakers generally. None of this was mentioned to us at the time, so hard for us to address. Unusual. Can only suggest these two visitors were not suited to this activity.
