Very very steep! I think some of my fellow hikers were unprepared and regreded later! Hiking poles are a must. Took me 2h 15min and 2h 30min down, the way down was much harder for me and my knees. Slipery, muddy and tree roots. But nice views.
Omg! I have done so many hikes in nz n this is one of the best ones! Less then 3 hours to the hut, then 1,5 h to get to Brewster glacier and the lakes. Amazing view, waterfall and everything! The sunset was stunning n the stars were amazing! For the effort u put in u get sooo much back! Highly recommend this one???
One of the best views from the hut surroundings when sun sets. Unfortunately someone had broken into our car while we were on the hut overnight.
One of the most beautiful views over the Southern Alps is to do well in one day as the cabin costs $ 15 and is subject to booking. The path from the lodge is marked with cairns, they must go up from the left onto Mt Armstrong, from on the right there is no way to the summit ...
A wonderful track up to the Mount Amstrong, at the beginning step but amazing view when you leave the forest. I lost my walking poles at the beginning down where you have to cross the river. Two poles from Kathmandu. I would really appreciate if you give me a text or a call if you found the poles: 0275454283 Thanks Enjoy the walk :)
After a icy cold river crossing start, a fairly steep incline (2hrs for a fit person) leads to wonderful views across Mount Aspiring National Park including the Mount Brewster glacier. Definitely worth continuing up to the summit of Mount Armstrong, the expansive 360 views are some of the best in New Zealand. There are a few cairns that led the way, some can be misleading. Head up the middle track behind the hut and follow the cairns and keep fairly straight, but don’t be afraid to leave the cairns if they don’t seem right as they are also some used as markers for Mount Brewster!
The hike begins with the crossing of the frozen river in the morning but easy. Very steep climb in the forest but great view up to the hut on the snowy mountains. For the summit, still snow, feasible without crampon but for experts only. Otherwise just the round trip to the hut took us 4:15.
Amazing walk ! Such a beautiful view ! The way to go it's pretty hard but totally worth it. I did it in 1:30 because it's start to snow and I was scared of being stuck at the summit. I would recommend to wait a bit more for the summer :) You will cross the river first to start the treck but do it !
Very exhausting to come up there. The way is permanently very steep! You walk over roots and it is very wet. We needed 2.5 hours high and 2 hours down. Unfortunately, everything was foggy when we were upstairs so I can not comment on the view! The cabin is clean and tidy! In the beginning you have to cross directly a river - this has been extremely cold!
The views are awesome. River crossing was ok (just the water was really cold) but be aware after heavy raining! the hike is really steep so be prepared. Do not forget your booking confirmation (we were 16 people at the hut everybody was claiming the reservation, only 12 beds tho)
