Absolutely amazing! If you're in Wanaka, DO IT! It took me 3 hours return, it's an easy way, so feasible for everyone. It's a one-hour drive on a street that takes some getting used to (many potholes, about 7 river crossings and cow and sheep stops) but it's worth 100%.
Mesmerizing place! Way better than Fox or Franz Josef glacier for hikes
Yesterday I found a phone with a sticker of a bat near the end of the track, Im going to leave it in the Wanaka i-site office this afternoon hope the owner reads this :)
Beautiful walk and amazing view at the end as you open up onto The valley and see the glacier. Much better than Fox or Franz Josef glaciers - bigger, closer, and more immersive. The track begins following and crossing a nice large river and after the swing bridge turns into a shaded forest walk for most of the track. It took us 3 hours. The road there was a substantially shorter drive than as predicted by Google Maps - probably Google was accounting for it being a gravelly road (though it wasn’t that bad) and the fact that there are cattle/sheep stops.
Epic reward for level of output. Loved this track. Highly recommend this track as you get a bit of everything. Bush, swing bridge, glacier, waterfalls, farm land. The drive out is gravel road. Fine for all cars. There are some fords to drive through but they are fairly mild. Check how much rainfall there has been recently if you are worried.
The track is finally opened! We just did it yesterday and it was beautiful. 10km there and back. Short and easy for relax. A lot of people went there :)
