Wonderful quiet spot on the lake. Clean facilities.

I absolutely do not recommend this place. We were the only ones on the campsite, on the Macdonald side, without any phone signal, and it was impossible for us to sleep at night. At least 6 keas spent the night shouting, climbing on the van and giving pics everywhere. We were also overwhelmed by sandflies. We finally left the place at 5 a.m. and could no longer.

We should have known there was something wrong with this place when there were only two cars staying here. If you don’t want to get your car dismantled during the night by aggressive kea birds then I would not recommend staying here. These angry matcha birds were laughing at us while tearing apart our rubber seals. Nothing scared them away, they would always eventually come back like a toxic ex. If you stay here, I recommend sacrificing one of you to the kea gods. Good luck!

Campsite of the DOC, clean toilets + large drainage. No many replacements all without network. If you want to see Kea this is the place, there are a lot especially in the morning

Lovely spot, breathtaking views by the lake. Site was raided at first light by 15+ Kea parrots, noisy little buggers peaking at people’s campers.

We booked online and had as assigned spot. rangers were checking. Beautiful view of the lake and just a short walk to the shore. A small path led between the two campsites. We were in Otto. Clean bathroom. Place to wash dishes. Overall a great stay.

We reserved online beforehand and found our spot easily; campsite wasn’t full. Amenities are great - flush toilets and sinks to wash up. Beautiful lake. There are seperate entrances for Otto or MacDonald’s - both just as good. Limited phone signal. Would recommend!

One of the best DOCs we have stayed at, facilities cleaned both nights we stayed there, lovely spot right next to the lake which you can swim in, and close to Franz Josef for exploring the glaciers!

Beautiful spot, really liked staying here for the night. Peaceful and gorgeous lake. Pretty sure I heard a Kiwi at night! Reserve online before you arrive, spots are pretty snug if full but it wasn’t when we went. Otto is closer to lake but online suggests not for large motor homes though there were some anyway. Clean proper toilets!! What DOC camping is all about - great basics and superb scenery.
