Really nice spot for self contained only! Right next a road but really quiet during the night. The parking must be empty by 7:00 am, a freedom camping ranger came by us at 7:30 PM to explain us we had to leave early on the morning, but you're welcome to have your breakfast in the parking of the Kaikoura peninsula walkway nearby 👍

I booked a spot at this campsite right in front of the beach. However, the access road into the campsite is densely wooded and tight, making it easy for a caravan to get scratched. Besides, the pitches are very close to one another, so it feels cramped overall. Even though it’s supposed to be a beachfront site, the trees block the view, and you can barely see the beach.
~ 8 - 10 bay freedom camp in the parking lot of the main strip of shops. This carpark is paid from 8:30am- 5:30pm, for $1 an hour. Toilet block max 3 minute walk at end of lot and clean. Bridge just behind the toilets that takes you straight onto the beach. Lot was full probably around 7:30 which is when the ranger came
20-ish bay freedom campground with numbers on the fence to designate parks. Nil facilities - closest toilet is ~15mins walk away, free shower down on the esplanade. Last car came around 9pm, ranger came around 8:45pm and was super lovely and happy to share things to do. 25min walk to Kaikoura lookout
