Hiking through the forest, very muddy with lots of crevasses, water. The Green Lake hut is worth seeing, beautiful view. I recommend for sportsmen
Very muddy - lots of up and downs
So guys, that was an awesome track, so adventurous and exciting with a beautiful view on the top of the Lake Monowai before to come down to the Green Lake (the lake is okay, nothing crazy)... BUT - it was extremely muddy and slippery everywhere ! Bring waterproof hiking boots ! - it was very hard even for us that we are fit (up and down, mud, holes, flooding etc) - it is about 15km one way and it took us 5h to go to the green lake and 4 hours to go back - the last part (when the sign shows 1h to the hut) is very steep, dangerous and slippery (made my girlfriend freaked out) so be careful - very easy to get lost at one point so open your eyes and follow the orange triangle (don't try to avoid the mud by an other way, you will get lost) - we were the only one doing the track at this period si be vigilant, you will not get some help very quickly in case something happen But seriously that a fantastic way to approach the very wild part of New Zealand Take care !
Be prepared to deal with a lot of mud, at least at the time I did it (april). The forest is so cool, it seems you're in Jurassic Park or something similar, but it gets a bit boring until you reach a saddle, from where you can spot the green lake, what an amazing view!
Very muddy track and 99% of it goes trough the forest. Beautiful forest, but 6.5 hours through forest. The last part goes up and down, up and down and is steep. The Green lake hut is great and the view to the lake is very beautiful! There is drinking water. You must buy 5 $ standard hut ticket in advance (absolutely worth it!). It took us 5 hours through mud to get back to the car park.
These tracks are inaccessible in the winter! We walked for an hour to a stream blocking the path... Had to turn around. Same for the shorter walk from the road!! Be aware or wear gumboots!
The track is a bit muddy but what a beautiful view at green lake! And historic Clark hut is difficult to find but awesome (very old and with a chimney)!
