I just called the DOC, The gravel road is Close for the all winter. There are a access if you begin the hiking to the lake but count 2/3 days. The road will be opened again and of October.
Great walk with stunning scenery! Go all the way up to prominent Pt 1476 for superb views of Island Lake, Green Lake, and Fiordland’s mountain tops (we didn’t do the summit of Mt Burns due to clouds, but it’s probably a worthwhile 1 hr climb from the ridge). Road is open as of 6 Feb (after torrential rain in Fiordland) and was easy with van. If you have driven a few backcountry roads in NZ, you might even consider this one to be the best maintained ;)
Road open and accessible by van !! It takes 30 minutes on a gravel road to access the start of the track! Pretty hike but watch out for the changing weather! Muddy path!
Road is open now. I did it with my van on a rainy day so it should be fine for everyone. Just a few potholes on the way
Road still closed
Road closed. 14 km of gravel road on foot to access the start of the track
Warning ! The 14km road to the beginning of the Mount Burns track is a 4x4 (4wd) road, as indicated at the beginning of the latter.
Mega schön? a must do !! You have to do☺️ After 45 minutes you reach the many small lakes but you can also go up to the summit (1.45) .. Before that you have to drive half an hour on this really crappy gravel road ? but it's worth it
That‘s definitly one of my favourit tracks in nz. You‘ll be there by your own. Because of the 14 km gravelroad it‘s a secret spot and you will see no one else there. Best recommondation I can do. It‘s about 1,5-3 hours to the top with a stunning view
Attention: The starting point stored in the app is not the beginning of the track, but the beginning of the road leading to the track. From there it is about 30 minutes to the beginning of the track. You're there when you see the toilet. It is worth taking the road. If you're up there, do yourself a favor and explore the area. Take good shoes and insect spray with you!
