Heaphy Campsite
This is one of nine Great Walk campsites on the Heaphy Track.
It overlooks the Heaphy River mouth, which is an exciting place. The river surges out through a narrow gap into the sea - incoming waves halt the flow and the churning of salt and fresh waters is spectacular.
Limestone cliffs and lush tropical forest with nikau palms surround the area.
- Number of campers - 40
- Number of tent sites - 20
All campsites on the Heaphy Track have a water from a tap and toilets that are supplied with toilet paper; Heaphy Hut has a flush toilet. It also has sinks.
Campers are not permitted to use hut facilities.
Hut wardens move between nearby huts in the summer. As well as checking campsite bookings, they are able to provide campers with information about the track and weather.
Bookings are required year round for all huts and campsites on the Heaphy Track. See Fees and bookings.

The Heaphy Campsite has been reviewed by multiple individuals, all of whom have had a generally good experience at the site. Many have praised the campsite's beautiful location, with one reviewer mentioning the stunning sight of the sea coming into the river. The huts themselves have also been described as lovely and well-maintained, with one reviewer noting that the toilets are flush. However, the main drawback of the campsite is the sandfly problem. Reviewers have consistently mentioned that sandflies are a major issue, although some have noted that they are less of a problem within the huts. Despite this, many have still recommended the campsite and enjoyed their stay there. To avoid issues, reviewers have suggested bringing insect repellent, long-sleeved shirts, and pants to protect against the sandflies.
