Whether you've just come over the Bombays from Auckland in the north, or your're coming out of the Coromandel to the east, Hamilton (Kirikiriroa) is likely to be your next stop - and here's why.
It's a city built around the water and its award winning gardens.
As you arrive into town, start your morning or visit just north of town at Zealong Tea Estate. It’s the only commercial tea plantation in New Zealand, and walking through the rows of tea hedges feels like a total escape and it's a quiet way to kick off the trip.

For breakfast, head to Hayes Common. It’s a neighbourhood favourite right on the river with a menu that consistently hits. If your arrival aligns with lunch, head to Made Market, Hamilton East. A vibrant, local favourite offering a curated mix of food vendors, from fresh bites to global flavours, all under one roof.
Hamilton Gardens are lovely to visit, in any season
Spend the afternoon exploring the world-class Hamilton Gardens - Visitors of all ages and stages are truly enamoured by this world-class experience. If you have the time (Hamilton is also a great place to add on an extra day), be sure to check out Te Awa and Victoria on the Water. After, head to Good George Dining Hall. Set in a converted church, it’s one of the best brewery atmospheres in the country and a great spot to grab a tasting paddle.
For dinner, Gothenburg offers great views and a Scandinavian-inspired menu, while Mr Pickles is the go-to for a more casual, social vibe. Whatever you do, finish the night at Duck Island Ice Cream. It’s a Hamilton original and arguably the best scoop in the country.

🌊 Extend Your Stay – Raglan Side Trip

If you’ve got time for a detour, head west. Raglan is the ultimate New Zealand surf town—laid back, creative, and completely unique.

For lunch, the Raglan Fish Shop on the wharf is a must. Grab your fresh catch and eat it right on the jetty watching the tide come in.

🦇 Day 2: Waitomo & Sanctuary Mountain

Enjoy your journey south and watch the landscape change as you enter the limestone hills of Waitomo. The Glowworm Caves boat ride is a classic experience, or for something more high-energy, try Black Water Rafting 'the Abyss'.

After Waitomo, it's time to head to 'the Mountain".
Stop for lunch in Ōtorohanga at The Thirsty Weta Bar & Eatery, and depending on timing, visit Kiwi House and Native Bird Park.
Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is a haven for native wildlife
It's now time for the lush greenery of Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari. This is a world-class conservation project—a "mainland island" protected by one of the world's longest pest-proof fences. Walk through ancient Jurassic-style forest and keep an eye out for wētā and rare native birds like the Kākā and Takahē.
Overnight: Head just up the road to stay near Hobbiton™ Movie Set at either Da Barn or Brocks Place.
🌿 Day 3: The Shire and Cambridge

No visit to Waikato is complete without a visit to the Shire
Start the day at Hobbiton™ Movie Set on their early morning tour. The level of detail in the Shire is incredible, even if you aren't a film buff. By doing the early tour, you're likely to miss most of the day tours that will be on their way from Auckland. Be sure to enjoy lunch and a brew at the famous Green Dragon Inn!

Your next stop is Cambridge, famous for its champion horses and massive oak trees, giving the town a classic, unhurried feel. Have a wander through the boutique shops for the ultimate holiday momento.

The Hobbiton™ Movie Set and Waitomo Caves are two of New Zealand’s premier attractions. During the peak summer period (January and February), we highly recommend booking as far in advance as possible—ideally months ahead—to secure your preferred dates and time slots. However, last-minute availability can often pop up, so it is always worth checking online for recently released tickets - Travel Time:
Don't rush the backroads. The drive between Cambridge and Waitomo is incredibly scenic but winding—allow an extra 20 minutes for photo stops!
