Stunning place. Campsite a bit further from the lake, nice walks around, saw some wallabies. Campsite toilets on the other hand, probably the most disgusting I’ve ever seen. Little rubbish around which could be easily cleaned by people who run this place. A bit more effort would make the place perfect.

Beautiful place, but gets really expensive when you have to pay 26$ for 2 persons plus 10$ (not 5!) for the forestry road usage permission. This price would be okay with showers, power or WiFi..

Really nice places thought to take water and a little patience for the journey the way is quite long but it's really worth it

The campsite itself is your standard DOC with basic facilities, but with a proper self contained vehicle that’s never a worry. Had the entire place to ourselves. Logging trucks can be intimidating but roads to the campsite were wide and well maintained. Worth it 100% if you’re going to hike to the falls; absolutely breathtaking.

A lovely tranquil, remote campsite with lots of space and good hiking tracks. The road in was fine in early November, much better than expected. We were the only camper on our first night! The track to the Tarawera Falls from the camp is great, following the clear, aqua blue river to the impressive falls, three hours return. On our second day we hiked another good track around the lake and over to Humphries Bay, five hours return. NZMCA Wireless Nation internet also worked here.

Absolute gem of a spot. Visited in winter and we were one of two Campervans onsite. So magical. Favourite falls yet with a breathtaking walk through native bush. So many different types of Koru. Walk south round the lake for the best sundowner views. BE WARNED: Do Not follow your GPS to get to the campsite!! We first ventured down Valley Road which turned from tarmac into a precarious and windy soft sand track that just stopped in the middle of nowhere, in the forest, as darkness fell. Better to head to Maori Investments first and they’ll give you a map to the campsite. TIP: It’s a proper gravel road, long and straight - no potholes or sand involved :)
