I arrived at 6am to a 2/3 full car park. Sad to report that it looked like several people had camped there overnight in their vans. I’m pretty sure this is not a freedom campsite. C’mon guys. Don’t be douchebags. Do what you’re supposed to do and get up early and drive there like the rest of us do from your designated site. It’s stuff like this that turns places into Queenstown…… (check the listed sites on this app for that town and you’ll get what I mean). It’s a long slog uphill but the views are worth it. I managed to miss the major crowds too (remember most of them will still asleep in their vans….) and so the viewpoint only had a small group on it. Most people end their trek here but the actual peak is another 1.6km of a grind - you decide if you want pretty much the same view, just higher. Please stick to the actual track. Lots of signs of people going off trail. That’s a massive no no in the trekking world. This track also crosses private land - please respect the landowners property & livestock. Remember that the weather at the top might be very different from the bottom. The number of people complaining about it being cold…. You’ve just climbed about 1500m! This is why there’s such a thing as the 10 essentials. Check any SAR website and they’ll educate you…. For FREE!
Beautiful views, bit of a boring and relentless climb I would recommend walking up in the dark and going for sunrise. Walking up in the sun looks horrendous!
We wanted to do the track, but we figured that the track is closed from Sept. - Oct. Every year, because of lambing. It is not for the whole three months, but the specific dates change.
Great walk, it's steep and challenging but the track is well maintained - even children were doing it. Took us 2.5hrs to get to the lookout and another half hour to the top. About 2hrs to get down. We walk in a very moderate pace. It was also pretty warm - we didn't use our jackets, just thermals and another layer.
Stunning views !! Took us about 3 hours to get on the top, with breaks and 2 hours to get down. We took our time. It’s steep but worth it !! If it hasn’t been raining you can done regular sport shoes, not necessarily hiking shoes. There is a toilet at the view point, 30 minutes before the summit (and also at the parking lot).
Superb view but slightly annoying climb and descent profile. Harmless animals present. Is it worth it!
Don’t miss out on this opportunity, even if you don’t think you’re fit enough! I hiked this track yesterday morning, leaving at 4am to catch the sunrise, and I didn’t believe I would make it to the peak. With some motivation from my own head, I managed to keep going and reach the top in 3 hours! I am in no means ‘mountain hiking fit’, with Roy’s peak being the first mountain climb I have ever tackled. Just keep going, and the gorgeous sunrise will make it worth it. I am a little sore today, but the soreness is nothing compared to the euphoria of reaching the peak!
