NOTE SH38 is unsealed!! We didn't realise there was about 100km of gravel Road around the lake, huge pot holes and very dodgey for a big campervan! The doc campsite had a few long drop toilets and disables access. Beautiful spot by the lake but be prepared for the road access!

YOU NEED TO PAY THE FEE AT THE VISITOR CENTRE NEXT TO THE HOLIDAY PARK! There was no information board about the campsite but just found one notice paper on the door of the toilet and it says you need to pay the fee at the centre which closes at 4.30 on weekdays. I didn't know about it and got there at 5.30. It's a long way to the centre, no reception and nothing else around there to stay so I ended up just leaving the fee on the dashboard of my car but no one came to collect it. There should be an honest box! One bright side is there's plenty of space to choose from.

Huge and gorgeous campsite if you’re on your way around the lake. No information on cost/ donation or anything. We did fine on the road in our rear wheel drive L300. It has a couple of steep corners which could cause issues.

Stunning campsite! But it is gravel narrow and winding down to the waters edge! if you have a front wheel drive do not attempt it as you will struggle to come back up!

Absolutely stunning spot. Wish we found this first as we stayed at Rosie’s Bay the night before! We were one of three groups there but the place is so big we felt like we were on our own! Definitely worth it and within walking distance to an amazing waterfall!!!

Paid at tribal office which are at lake waikaremoana or Ruatahuna. Has long drops, sinks and million dollar views. Would like to stay again when hot so can swim in lake. Narrow windy road to access but we have 7 metre caravan and Ute and it was ok. 4wd was needed to exit

Update. Pay at Waikaremoana Trible Office, not free, no more honesty box. No rubbish. Not DOC maintained anymore. The driveway is a bit bumpy some camper vans may struggle.

Beautiful place by the lake!

Amazing free campsite, we loved spending the night here! Plenty of room to choose from, the drop-down toilets were bearable, and there was a room with sinks to wash up (and do the dishes too), even some soap bars. The lake view is gorgeous!
