The track is cordoned off with barrier tape "Danger keep out", I didn't dare to walk the track alone.
Trailhead from the DOC freedom campsite, which is really very pleasant for a quiet night. Walked the first sector to the bridge which took 2 hours of steady progress. Trail follows the river and is very pretty, a few ups and downs but not steep by NZ standards. Only downside is the trail does not break out from the forest, but the forest is beautiful.
Eh. Nice forest walk but unless you’re doing the big multi-day loop it’s not that exciting as a ‘there and back’ walk. Very quiet though, didn’t see anyone else at all in 4 hours. We hiked to Franks stream and back. Trail is fairly flat for nz but plenty of tree roots and the odd fallen tree to traverse.
Lovely river walk. We only did the first hour from the campsite so no spectacular views but nonetheless a peaceful morning walk.
We hiked from Tawanui Camp to Frank’s Creek and had our lunch overlooking the first swing bridge before returning. It took us two hours each way, making a good day hike. The track is mostly alongside the dark and pretty Catlins River, but there are quite a number of up and downs, and tree roots to navigate along the way.
River walk is open but the loop track is closed until April 2019. So you'd have to go back the same way. Check with the Catlins info centre.
Entry via end of campground. Times accurate, one way, return from frank stream via road took just over one hour. Track does not match map or GPS maps
Nice little path in the forest ... We just make a return from the Wist to the first refuge ... Easy and nice. Nice little stops near the river. Magic forest. The Wist was hard to find. I added a point on the map. You have to follow the public toilets to find it.
We started at the wisp and walked the catlins river Track on the first day. Then slept at tawanui camp site and walked back over the Wisp Loop. Wisp loop was a little bit boring except Rocky knoll. But catlins river walk was awesome!
Walked 45 minutes one way and then back. It’s pleasant through bush and trees with the river to one side. I’d say go early as it is steep at parts and could be hard when sunny. There’s also a doc site here, if you’re planning on doing the tramp I’d recommend staying here and walking early.
