6-Day Twin Coast Discovery Highway

Start your journey in Auckland and follow the ultimate 6-day loop through the Northland Region — where wild coastlines, ancient forests, Māori heritage, island bays, and legendary seafood define one of New Zealand’s most diverse road trips.

This is the Twin Coast Discovery Highway, an 800km self-drive route connecting both the east and west coasts of Taitokerau Northland, from Auckland all the way to Cape Reinga and back.

Day 1: Auckland to Hokianga via the Kauri Coast

Ancient kauri forests and wild west coast scenery

Leave Auckland and head north into the Kauri Coast, where city skylines quickly turn into rolling farmland, giant forests, and rugged west coast scenery.

Before leaving Auckland, fuel up with breakfast at Richoux Patisserie, Bestie Cafe, or Cornwall Park Bistro. If you’re after one last city treat, grab gelato at Giapo before hitting the road.

Break up the drive in Maungaturoto and Paparoa, known for quirky antique stores, local craft shops, and roadside cafés.

Continue to The Kauri Museum in Matakohe, one of Northland’s best museums, where stories of the kauri logging industry and early settler life come alive.

Stretch your legs in Dargaville with a short detour to Te Pou Tu Te Rangi Harding Park Lookout for panoramic harbour views or visit the Dargaville Museum.

Spend the afternoon swimming, kayaking, or picnicking at Kai Iwi Lakes, famous for crystal-clear freshwater and bright white sand. If conditions suit, adventurous travellers can also drive or walk along Ripiro Beach, New Zealand’s longest drivable beach.

Before sunset, head into Waipoua Fores and stop at:

End the day with a guided twilight or night tour through Waipoua Forest to experience the forest transition after dark and hear Māori stories connected to the ngahere (forest).

Day 2: Hokianga to Ahipara via cultural coastline

Māori heritage and long coastal beaches

Wake up beside the spectacular Hokianga Harbour, a place deeply connected to Māori settlement and storytelling.

Start your morning at Manea Footprints of Kupe in Opononi, an immersive cultural storytelling experience exploring Polynesian navigation and the legendary voyage of Kupe.

If time allows, take the ferry to Ōpononi Sand Dunes for sandboarding or simply admire the enormous dunes from the waterfront.

Continue to Rāwene, one of New Zealand’s oldest settlements, for brunch at the iconic Boatshed Café.

Afterwards, browse local galleries or take the short car ferry to Kohukohu, a charming heritage village filled with art spaces and historic buildings.

Want more time on the water? Join the Ranui Harbour Cruise, a relaxed journey sharing stories of Hokianga history and Māori settlement.

Travel north through rolling countryside toward Ahipara, stopping in Kaitaia for supplies or lunch at local favourites like Peekaboo Backyard Eatery.

Finish the day at Te Oneroa-a-Tōhē Ninety Mile Beach, where vast stretches of sand meet dramatic west coast sunsets. If the tide is low, visit Shipwreck Bay, famous for surf breaks and visible shipwreck remains.

Beer lovers should stop into PhatHouse Brewing Co for local craft beer and pizza.

Day 3: Kaitaia to Cape Reinga & Doubtless Bay

Sacred northern landscapes and remote beaches

Today is all about bucket-list Northland landscapes.

Stock up in Kaitaia before heading north to Te Rerenga Wairua Cape Reinga, one of New Zealand’s most spiritually significant places, where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean collide.

Along the way north, stop at:

Remember — eating lunch at Cape Reinga is discouraged due to its spiritual significance, so save your picnic for later.

On the drive south, discover some of the Far North’s best beaches:

Finish the day in Mangōnui, home to the legendary Mangōnui Fish Shop, widely considered one of New Zealand’s best fish and chip spots.

Stay nearby in Doubtless Bay, where you can enjoy a peaceful sunset swim or waterfront dinner.

Day 4: Doubtless Bay to Kerikeri

Historic sites, waterfalls, vineyards, and orchard country.

This stretch combines dramatic coastal scenery, hidden beaches, vineyards, and historic sites.
For incredible views, hike to Kaiaraara Rocks (The Duke’s Nose) overlooking the spectacular Whangaroa Harbour.

Alternatively, explore the Mahinepua Peninsula Walk, one of Northland’s most underrated coastal walks, or relax at stunning Matauri Bay, known for turquoise water and the memorial to the Rainbow Warrior wreck.

As you travel toward Kerikeri, stop at roadside fruit stalls for local citrus, avocados, and seasonal produce.

Once in Kerikeri, explore:

If you have extra time, Kerikeri also has several additional waterfalls including Charlies Rock, Wharepuke Falls, and Makana Chocolate Factory for sweet treats.

Round out the evening with wine tasting or sunset dining at Paroa Bay Wineries Sage Restaurant, The Landing, or dinner at Terra Restaurant.

Day 5: Bay of Islands adventure day

Island cruising, marine life, and national history.

Base yourself in Paihia, Russell, or Waitangi and spend the day exploring one of New Zealand’s most beautiful marine playgrounds.

Start at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, one of the country’s most important historical sites and the birthplace of modern New Zealand. Allow at least three hours to explore the museums, grab a guided tour and cultural performance, and to explore the expansive grounds.

For train lovers or families, ride the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway at nearby Kawakawa and see the quirky Hundertwasser Toilets.

Day 6: Bay of Islands to Auckland via Whangārei

Take the scenic coastal route south through some of Northland’s most beautiful beaches and marine landscapes.

Stop at Helena Bay, where winding roads lead to a stunning café and gallery overlooking the coast.

Detour to the Tutukākā Coast, one of the world’s great coastal destinations and gateway to the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve, rated among the world’s top dive sites by Jacques Cousteau, best explorted with a Snorkelling or SCUBA tour with Dive! Tutukaka.
