Well worth taking some time to stop here and find out about the dramatic 1953 Tangiwai Rail Disaster. Excellent displays, monument and walking track to view the bridge. My husband’s Aunty was on the train on her way to spend Christmas with their family, she was never found.

Nice stop if you're into historical events. The memorial isn't very big but there are lots of pictures and explanations of the disaster day. Well maintained by the local community (clean paths, and lookouts.
