I had a great time riding the trail, although I sometimes had to walk cause the trail was to steep for me... Stunning views and the bridges are worth seeing! Bring enough water and a snack. For me personally one way was enough, but if you're in good condition you can do one way and return.
Hired bikes from TCB in Okahune for $30 each (half day for students) and a $15pp shuttle to the starting point. Quite a challenging track for beginners especially in the rain as some of the ground is loose and rocky but amazing views and points of interest along the way!
Rode this trail starting in Horopita with a shuttle to the start. As others have mentioned it is mostly downhill so best to start here. That being said there was definitely still some up hill! Also, two spots where bikes needed to be carried up a few steps (at the train track crossing). Lovely way to spend two hours. Lots of variety on the trail- gravel double track, some single track, riding in the Forrest, and grassy hills.
This historical track can be walked or cycled from either end. If cycling you can be dropped at the Horopito end for $15pp with a mainly downhill ride back to Ohakune. 15km but you need several hours to enjoy it and read the many information boards. Extremely well done. Picnic tables and toilet across the restored Hapuawhenua Viaduct.
This was so Nice! Not touristy and quite impressive and interesting to learn about the history of this place.
Definitely start this from Oakaune, the bridge is at this end and lots of signs and explaining the area.
