Not sure if that apparently epic fish and chips is worth the 100km drive to Jackson Bay and return, but the road... Is just a straight road surrounded by forest, nothing epic (after 3 weeks travelling across NZ)... When we were there no dolphins, no seals, no Cray Pot... Maybe in summer, but in winter not worth it IMHO.
This drive was so beautiful and I believe when the track is open worth coming down just for the chance to see penguins up live and close. We came just to experience and enjoy Cray pots restaurant and we did exactly that! Cray pots was a 10/10 in my humble opinion some of the best fesh and cheps I’ve ever had! (Apologies for the dad joke) Today was its final day open until summer which would also be such a vibe but I’d call ahead just in case it’s worth it on the off chance they’re open. Still a beautiful drive anyway if you have the time! Phoenix + Pete
Jackson Bay was totally worth the drive! The road has mixed reviews here, but was fine in our regular van, just a few bumps. I enjoyed the view of green rainforest! The Cray Pot was the reason we came here. It was AMAZING - the seafood chowder was divine, as were the fish and chips with salad, and the waitress was wonderful! Make sure it’s open before you visit. You can camp for two nights if you’re self contained.
Today closed Road because of slips. But we saw a lot of Hectordolfins from the beach.
Incredible spot! The bay has amazing views! We had lovely fish & chips for lunch (open in summer 11- 3:30) at the bay. The homemade cheesecake is recommendable
Cute lil historical town. Good spot for a feed and coffee. Sandflys were nuts on the bay and the drive from haast is probably the bumpiest sealed road ive ever been on in the motorhome so just be mindfull.
Beautiful little fishing Bay with a cute Fish&Chips place.. Unfortunately closed for the winter
For lunch and a little walk this place is great and very beautiful. However it’s quite out of the way and a long road without many views of the ocean.
Was there today! Saw a pod of dolphins, went in the water for a swim with them. Was absolutely amazing :)))
Possibly my favourite drive in the whole of NZ
