Driving from Haast, park in front of the bridge on the left side. Then cross the road carefully and walk towards the bridge. Here just go down to the little stream and follow into the Canyon. You have to cross the stream twice, but the water is max knee deep, just cold. It's worth it.

Amazing! If coming from Haast, park at the gravel spot past the bridge, if coming from Wanaka, park before the bridge. The path is a little cliff edge next to the bridge that descends into the chasm. Right now when walking into see the water falling, it gets about knee high and is very cold. But as long as you have socks and sandals and steady feet you should be fine! It is really stunning in there.
