Way crowded, DOC website seems to have more spaces listed than campers/trailers/cars can actually fit. Doesn't help when people don't park efficiently so that others can fit in. Does the job for a night when passing through, but not worth $15pp per night, many other DOC sites are so much better. You will get lots of sandflies in this area of NZ so be prepared with bug spray when visiting!
No exact spot to park which means there’s not a reserved spot and might not be be a spot for you if you arrive late even though you have payed and booked online. It’s 15$ per person and one of the worst sites we’ve stayed at. No amenities and so many sandflies and cicadas. We weren’t able to cook since the doors in the van must be open neither did we leave the van all evening due to the amount of sandflies.
I didn't like it at all. I've been to several campsites across the South Island, and this is the most expensive one I've paid for, and it has no amenities whatsoever, not even soap or hand sanitizer. Other free places had those things. It was really bad and full of mosquitoes.
Somehow way more people then the maximum amount of camperspots. Toilets were ok. Below average for a DOC campingspot
Nice spot, nothing spectacular but all fine. Lots of sandflies.
Beautiful spot as described. Noone here - until someone else rocks up at 8pm, parking 2m away.! We ignored the banging & pump noises, going to sleep at 10 - to be woken up 45 mins later by their outside light left on shining right in our window... I moved. They'd gone by early morning. 3rd time in 2 weeks folks have come in late & squeezed in when there's plenty of other space. Guys please just pay DOC fees and contribute to NZ conservation. And space, sheesh - please!
Great spot. Beautiful view. If you dare you can take a dip in the lake nearby. Toilets are fine.
Very busy and congested spot in the evenings, OK for an overnight stay, plenty of grass area to pitch a tent but you can't get a vehicle to the sites so you end up carrying everything. Clean flushing toilets, great mobile coverage. A picturesque spot... if you don't mind the sandflies
We were disappointed with this place. Not sure why you have to pay $10 per person when the facilities are worse than most Freedom Camping spots we’ve stayed in so far. The toilets were cleanish but there were lots of bugs in there and no soap at the sinks. The sandflies were the worst we’ve experienced so far. We had to stay in the van from when we arrived at 4pm because of this. It would have been fine for just one night had it been free but paying to have this experience was grim!!
Sandflies were pretty bad- be warned! The toilets were also not great. The site itself was pretty and a good stopping point between Mt Aspiring and the West Coast.
