Great little freedom campspot about 13 minutes out of central Hokitika. Nice and quiet, small space enough for only a handful of cars. They provide lovely clean flushing toilets and offer campers a $12 breakky at the cafe along with a discount on the treetop walk, how awesome! We really appreciated the extra effort put in to provide a free spot for campers :)
The campsite was good. Walk was great, but a let-down considering the price. It felt like we got ripped off. Way to expensive for what it is.
The only free campsite with toilets near Hokitika! A simple gravel car park, with about 10-15 places, the toilets are clean, the place is very nice and quiet. Even if you arrive after dark, you should find a place. Only negative point: there are some sandflies and mosquitoes, be prepared and keep your doors closed... Our opinion : perfect for free camping near Hokitika, we stayed 2 nights before going to Franz Josef. Feel free to contact us on Instagram for more information: @thesunhikers ??
Freedom camp for self and non self contained vehicles! Nice toilets and rubbish bins! this is how freedom camping should be hehe ? nice sky as well! we couldn't check the cafe out because we cane late and left early
Nice little camping spot. Good toilets. Tree Top walk was fun. Zip line was not open for public yet.
Be sure to try the free Sandfly remedies. Better not to order a thick smoothie
Great tourist idea. Such a beautiful spot even in cloudy wet weather. Definitely recommend stopping by
Absolutely loved the walk in spite of the rain, very pleased to have made the effort. The view from the high tower of the lake in the mist was magnificent. Being able to overnight in their quiet free campground was a bonus. I could be tempted to do it again in fine weather.
Got a deal on grabone and was a beautiful walk. Crying kids ruined the stunning bird calls but we walked around again once they had left and it was great. Basic gravel park with long drop toilet, rubbish and recycling but nice free camp site.
Worth the money. Amazing looking down on top of the trees. Great photo opportunities. Enjoyed the famous South Island cheese roll at the Cafe. Shop well stocked for those little holiday gifts and priced competitively.
