Access to the dam, helipad and waterfalls are now closed by the company operating the hydro dam. The actual DOC track remains open.
Nice hike, quite steep at times. Sadly lost my white wool hat there :-( (22/11-2024). If found please contact me on whats app +46727336090
Definitely need a 4WD after gate, road is very rough, no camping allowed here as it is a reserve. Nice walk but very steep.
Didn’t do the full Alta lake hike but was really nice. I recommend two things if doing shorter hike: 1: going up 10-20mins in the valley and to the waterfall after the sign saying “Alta lake 6-8hrs” that is just before the bush line. Bit of tramping and uneasy track but worth it. 2: going right at the dam, crossing the little bridge and continuing on the pipe to the waterfall. Great views, especially for sunset :) Enjoy!
Best hike we did so far and we really enjoyed it. The hike itself is demanding and challenging but for a change it’s something different every now and then which we really liked. Here we had the feeling it was more about the hike than it was about a Lookout at the end and if you realize that you spend more time hiking than later on at a Lookout that’s something quite nice. And if you do look for the perfect picture Spot you can still turn at the first waterfall and take the right path to an incredible view over the lake and Queenstown.
Turn right at the water pump and walk across a pipe line. The view is amazing and it took us just 1 hour to get there. There are also a few climbing walls with carabiners, which look good.
VERY VERY VEEEERY steep road leading up, our Toyota Voxy wasn’t man enough and was burning rubber so your better off parking opposite the gates off the road and walk the rocky road up. ENJOY!!
This is a great track and can see why you’d miss it on the way into Queenstown as not very well signposted, the gate is unlocked so don’t be put off by that, although the road up to the car park is a bit rough! Defo walk over the dam and do the extra walk to the waterfall was lots of fun just be careful! Also once you get to the end of the 4hr return track defo carry on another 5-10 mins up the rocks for a really good view
The road after the gate is very hard ! Be careful with your tyres
Great walk with stunning views! The track can be physically demanding at some points!
