The shorter track is highly recommended! Note the strong cool wind!!
Walk down the beach for 30 minutes then go over the dunes/hill to your left. Pants, goggles, and a bandana for your mouth would be ideal, but not nessecary. Prepare to be blown away (physically and mentally!). An absolute must see. AMAZING experience!
If someone found a cellphone type i iphone that day on the beach leading to the walking access to the farewell spit, it would be very nice to call me on 0273548662. Thank you very much. Mathilde.
If you're interested in the longer circuit along the spit, consider going clockwise. This puts the wind at your back on the northern side, and the signposts are much easier to see. The crossings between the beaches are both really interesting and it's amazing how far the sand spit reaches (bring sunscreen+water).
We started walking the inner shore of the spit and a couple of kms in, we crossed over to the outer shore (the 2nd crossover). We figured we’d just loop back to the first crossover but it was endless sand dunes and beaches. 3 hours later we made it back to our camp site - we walked from Farewell Gardens camp. We were not prepared for the vastness of this place, so our little stroll turned into quite the trek. Be prepared and bring water!
The walk to the point fossil is cute but without real interest. At the end we realize the immensity of the Spitz. But hey ... If you have the time it's not a must
