I went at 8pm and I saw 5 kea at the top of the walk. They were super friendly and didn’t fly away after seeing me. Incredible !

An easy walk up through beautiful bush to a lookout where you can see Mt Cook & other peaks on the Main Divide.And a distant view of the lagoon at Okarito. Just pick a clear day,usually mornings! 15/20 minutes to the lookout.Highly recommend. Lew Shaw

Super experience! At nightfall, we did not see any kiwi but by cons two very special birds very much like parrots (keas?) That really came very close to see us to the car, as to defend their territory and we scare. The flashlight scared them. When we passed the tree in which one was perched, to access the walking paths, the other shrieked very piercing. The path on the left allows you to see a beautiful vegetation, and an almost phosphorescent moss; it is a dirt road, which allows you to walk silently. The right path after the locomotive goes up well, but is made of gravel and bitum, so it is very difficult to be quiet and discreet. Maybe the best is to wait on the small parking lot!

Oops. There are 2 ways! Take the right way past the locomotive. This leads up to a beautiful observation deck. The other path leads far into the forest. We are turned after 1.7km at a junction.

Good chance at hearing kiwi ***at night***. You might even see one of you're super lucky. Drive slowly on the roads here.
