Pleasant and easy walk to the start of the cave walk loop, but the loop is quite hard going. Lots of mud. Lots of scrambling. The caves are good - you definitely need good footwear and torches. When you coming along from cave 3, look up and to the right for the continuation of the track. We got a bit lost there (even though there are about 4 large pointers). The footprints/trail along the creek and up the wrong hill indicate we're not the only ones
Not worth the long walk at all. You walk 40-50 minutes to the starting point of the cave hike. However, you are then not in a cave, but walk through bushes for another 20-30 minutes, only to be in a cave for 10 minutes, which is really not that spectacular. Then you walk about 20-30 minutes to the end of the circular route and then another 40 minutes back to the car. If you don't have much time here, you should skip this cave. The long hike to the cave and the fact that you have to drive all the way back, since you drive quite far out here and the road then leads to a dead end, can really save you. We have seen much nicer caves here in New Zealand that are not so remote.
One of the best walks we’ve done in NZ! Can be slippy in places, quite muddy even when hasn’t rained so need sturdy footwear for sure. The caves were AMAZING and one of the best bush walks in NZ. Took us 40 mins to cave walk beginning, 1 hour to do caves and 40 mins going back.
Awesome trail through the caves. Was lots of fun but be really careful. I slipped down the waterfall at the tunnel cave.
Sketchy. Looks like the track is closer but with the signs on the edge of the track it isn't completely clear. Gave it a miss.
Track Closed! Driven all this way for nothing!
Very adventurous walk! Be prepared for literally walking in the mud at this time of the year. The caves are definitely the best part, so well preserved and hidden. You will need a torch. Expect to get dirty and wet :)
10/10 for this walk. It is the best bush walk we did during our whole time in NZ. If you enjoy to climb over big roots of trees and dunk underneath trees this is the hike for you. Be aware, it's definitly worth the name "bush walk" and in the end you literally have to jump from branch to branch in the mud to not sink in. Take very good footwear! If you're keen to do it now : ENJOY !
This was the best experience in New Zealand so far( 2 weeks in) be prepared to get a little dirty, bush wacking trail is great feels like your in the jungle... Miners cave and tunnel cave were amazing, glow worms. Can’t say enough great things about these caves and hike!
Very nice. The cave loop is very muddy
