We did a morning walk to Scott’s beach and back - beautiful track I’d love to do the whole walk one day!
We just walked one step until Heaphy hut and it was amazing with a great weather. Less than 5 hours so we take time for a picnic and bath in the river. After a good night we did the way back.
We went to the hut and back the same day. Started at 7.30am and came back at 4.30pm. The track is very beautiful as you pass the palm trees and it's along wild beaches. Unfortunately we could not stop too long for breaks as you have a lot of sandflies ( the hut is not available for day walkers or campers). It's a long day and even it's flat you still get tired. My parter got a bit bored at the end but I loved it all the way as I love palm trees very much ! I recommend you can go as far as you want and then just come back whenever you want ! Enjoy the area :)
We only walked to Scott’s beach and it was beautiful! It’s not too long or steep. We sat at the beach for an hour just watching the big waves. On your way back you can do the nikau walk which is very beautiful as well and leads you back to the kohaihai bridge.
Did Heaphy Hut and back in 2 days which was great! Not many people at all and the hut is really well equipped with cooking facilities and even some pots and pans! Pure luxury and really nice ranger
We did the track until the Heaphy Hut and came back in the same day. 32 km and 10 hours with breaks, all the track is flat. You can do the same thing if you don't want pay a hut, it's easy of you are good walker. By the way, the track is amazing with the nikau Palm trees.
For all those who want to do the whole Heaphy track, I recommend starting from the Brown Hut and ending the Walk here! So you have the best part of the hike in the end! I do not want to imagine what it would have been like if I had walked the other way around ... The hike is very varied, but also gives some rather boring sections ... Especially the last one between the Perry Sattle and the Brown Hut. Also, a 1-2 day hike to the Heaphy or Lewis Hut is worthwhile for anyone who does not want to do the entire walk. Best hut for me is the Gouland Downs hat !! Have fun
***Note if you're doing the whole track you need transport one end to the other (400kms). We just did an overnight walk in to Heaphy Campsite, it's awesome Nikau palm forest track following the rugged coast the whole way, around 5hrs each way including a lunch break & photo stops.
Didn't do the whole track, but we were in the area so we walked to Scott's beach, that alone was an awesome walk and worth it just for that beach, took about an hour to walk there. You can camp right at the start in the Doc site if you spend some dollars. We chose not to stay but caught an amazing sunset driving back the little Whanganui freedom camp site. Rich & Em
You can walk to the Heaphy Hut and back in 1 day (c 34km). We've heard this is the best part of the track anyway. Beautiful coastline :)
