Golden Bay: Wild Beaches & Natural Wonders

Golden Bay is worth taking your time over, with golden beaches, crystal-clear springs, limestone landscapes and a laid-back creative community. This three-day itinerary takes you from Tākaka’s cafés and galleries to the wild coastline around Cape Farewell, with plenty of opportunities for scenic walks and camping along the way.

Day 1: Explore Tākaka & Golden Bay's Natural Wonders

Make your way over Takaka Hill, stopping to admire the views before descending into Golden Bay. Start exploring in Tākaka, a character-filled town with colourful shops, art galleries and cafés. It's a great place to grab a coffee, browse local crafts and stock up on supplies for your road trip.

Next, visit Te Waikoropupū Springs, famous for their exceptionally clear water. Follow the easy walking track through the surrounding reserve and take in the extraordinary blue hues from the viewing platforms. The springs are a sacred site, so swimming and touching the water are not permitted.

Te Waikoropupū Springs

In the afternoon, head to The Grove Scenic Reserve, where a short walk winds between towering limestone formations and lush native vegetation. Finish the day at Pōhara Beach, where you can stretch your legs along the sand and enjoy the sunset.

Day 2: Wild Beaches & Farewell Spit

Today is all about Golden Bay's rugged northern coastline. Drive towards Collingwood and Pūponga, stopping to explore the small coastal settlements and enjoy the changing scenery along the way.

Head to Wharariki Beach, one of the region's most spectacular coastal spots. A walk across farmland and through coastal dunes leads to a wild stretch of sand framed by enormous rock arches and sea caves. Keep an eye out for seal pups in the rock pools, particularly at low tide, and take care around the changing surf.

Wharariki Beach

Continue to Cape Farewell, the northernmost point of the South Island, for dramatic cliff-top views over the Tasman Sea. Nearby, Farewell Spit is a remarkable natural sand formation and an important habitat for birdlife. Join a guided eco-tour if you'd like to venture further along the spit, as access to the protected area is restricted.

On your way back, stop in Collingwood for a relaxed dinner or a wander around the waterfront before settling in for the night.

Day 3: Waterfalls, Coastal Walks & Local Flavours

Spend your final day exploring more of Golden Bay's beautiful landscapes. Start with the Wainui Falls Track, a rewarding walk through native forest, across a suspension bridge and alongside the river to an impressive waterfall. Allow around an hour or so for the return walk, depending on your pace and conditions.

Wainui Falls

After your walk, head to Tata Beach or Ligar Bay for a swim, a picnic or a little more time beside the water. If you'd prefer to get out on the water, consider a guided kayaking trip around the coast and the limestone formations near the Tata Islands.

Before leaving the region, stop at The Mussel Inn for a bite to eat and a taste of the local atmosphere. This well-known country pub is a favourite for its relaxed setting, live music and locally made drinks.
