3 Days in Taranaki: Mountain to Sea – From Black Beaches to Alpine Forests

3 Days in Taranaki: Mountain to Sea Adventures 🏔️🌊🌿

Taranaki is a land of striking contrasts — a near-perfect, dormant volcano rising from rolling farmland, black-sand beaches meeting the Tasman Sea, and lush native forests cloaking the maunga. Rich soils, coastal waters, and small-town cafés fuel a thriving local food scene, while 31 paid and 47 free camps across the region (listed on CamperMate) make overnight stays easy and flexible.

This south-to-north itinerary follows Surf Highway 45, linking surf beaches, mountain walks, and character-filled towns before finishing in New Plymouth. It can also be combined with other North Island routes for a longer road trip through alpine forests, coastal highlights, and urban charm.
