From the road

A super beautiful farm with a very nice owner! I don’t understand the negative reviews. The approach was not a problem at all with my van. It is a gravel road but well signposted where you have to go. I simply parked on the booked spot without “checking in”. In the afternoon I met the owner and he showed me the farm and I was allowed to feed the calves with him. I booked the powered site so that I have access to the warm shower :)

It is a large parking lot with sufficient spaces for self-contained vans. Toilets are available but were closed. For one night as a stopover it is sufficient.

This DOC spot is one of the most beautiful on the North Island! The road can be tricky, it is about 25 km of gravel road with some curves but I had no problems with my car (not a 4x4). If you grew up in a village in Germany, you also call such roads a "Promille-Weg". Just drive slowly, anticipate ahead and avoid the approach if it rained in the days before. In good weather it is definitely doable and the approach is worth it!

The reason for the bad review was the attitude of the camp manager. Upon arrival, she immediately made my friend and me very uncomfortable. She showed me the family bathroom, and reiterated the fact that my friend and I could use this shower together but could not bring anyone else into the shower, which I perceived as a very ageist, condescending comment. We actually left early on the day of check out due to feeling so uncomfortable because of her. Showers were $2 for 5 mins, no kitchen

Admittedly we did arrive about 6PM, so there was little parking available. However, if the people who were already there actually learnt how to park properly, then it wouldn’t have been as crowded. The view is incredible, and the lake is super scenic and gorgeous. The drop toilet was cleanish, but it stunk so bad that we had to spray our collars with perfume before heading in there, just to cover our noses and mask the scent

Hokitika as a town has little to offer, especially when compared to Aoraki, Wanaka and Queenstown. This park however was the saving grace of this stop. Brand new faciltiies including clean toilets, hot showers and an amazing kitchen (which has a plethora of pots, pans and utensils). There’s also a great playground with a jumping pillow, skate ramp and fun games to play. The ONLY small issue was the laundry only taking coins, which is probably my bad for not having any physical NZD on me.

We arrived around 7 pm and there were still parking spots available. Clean toilets. Really beautiful beach. It was very quiet at night. Highly recommended.

We stayed for one night and were first greeted by cat Millie upon arrival. Then we were very warmly welcomed by the owner with warm muffins. He shows us everything, gave us info for a hike and two vouchers for Wi-Fi. Everything is clean and well equipped. The animals on site may be fed and the hike to the waterfall and the fireflies is an absolute highlight. Really really great campsite!

It’s ok to stay one night, it’s near the beach. The entrance it’s a bit tricky

Lovely campsite with direct access to the beach, just gorgeous! Staff lovely and check in very easy. Hot showers have a 5min timer, but strong and clean and not busy so very good. It was at least $10 cheaper to book directly through the campsites website than through campermate - just a tip!

Best day out of my life, it’s a massive donut

So friendly and helpfull staff, great for the kids with the pool and jump-area.

We had a perfect night here. Quiet and site didn’t fill up completely.

Under new management, have stayed here a few years ago. Still the same, getting tired. Clean hot showers, coin operated $2 for 3 mins. For price I would have liked showers free. Had pick of any unpowered sites. Kiwi scratching around within 10m of the van.

Nice and quiet. Amazing caves right there. Only three other vans there, so plenty of space. Toilets Ok, outside shower broken. Didn’t notice sandflies, but amazing birdsong.

Great spot. There are around 6 spots around the park. The area is very clean and we had no major issues with noise overnight. There are a toilet blocks but no sure if open overnight, very clean though.

After attempting to stop along the Haast pass doc camp sites and getting smashed by sand flies we high tailed it here and we're relieved to find this one. No sand flies, massive kitchen and lounge with fire place, no crowds (only the white bait fishing oldies) and the place is immaculately clean 60nz for powered site (Oct)

Stunning sunrise. Great spot. As previous reviews, self contained toilet necessary.
