Very beautiful road, magnificent views high up on the lake, escapades in the tropical forest, crossing of some villages.

Beautiful! Drove it in a 2WD van in the rain after a week of heavy downpours without any problems.

Great road taking you through authentic NZ. Lots of horses all around, old cowboys kind of houses, pretty forest. Any type of car can make it through this road, just fill up gas and drive carefully.

Drove this road in a small non 4wd car. Saw everything from campervans to bicyclists using the road. It’s very narrow in some parts, and you have to go pretty slow over the gravel/unpaved sections. The road is scenic, and the villages along the way are small, a bit in disrepair, and very quiet. Everything has a middle of nowhere feel to it, and yes there are wild horses just wandering around. Make sure you do the big rata tree walk and check out Lou’s lookout. The great walk also has a great lookout.

Drove it the last two days after heavy rain. The road is in pretty good condition, at least better then the most gravel roads on the south island. Would recommend it for a car/camper with 4WD, it's not worth with a big motorhome due to many narrow parts. You should plan with 4-5 hours just for driving from Wairoa to Murupara. It's a good adventure for everybody who is searching for a lonely area on the north island.

The road is beautiful but one must be careful especially if it rains! And beware there are wild horses on the road! What to do if you have time it's a jungle!

Beautiful drive jut be careful it's gravel road for most of it and can be dangerous! Great stop off points along the way but fill up on fuel before you go! Lake wakiremoana is a must!
